For over a decade, groups of individuals in and around the Concord, New Hampshire region have worked tirelessly to identify opportunities for their children with disabilities to live independently. However, their efforts hit brick walls every step of the way.
Then Mike and Joya Dennehy started to look at housing in a different way. Liam Dennehy began attending Shepherd’s College, in Union Grove, Wisconsin, to learn how to live independently and to focus on a career in horticulture. This one-of-a-kind college has truly excelled in the way they teach young adults. Upon networking with other parents from around the country, it became clear that there is a path to housing for individuals with disabilities who just need a small amount of life coaching along the way. But this path requires two things: skills to live independently and private funding to make it happen.
When the perfect building hit the market in December of 2023, Mike and Joya decided to go all in. They took out a second mortgage on their home and they cashed in retirement funds to make this development a reality. And they did it with joy in their hearts because of the void it will fill for adults who strive to become independent.
Mike assembled a group of wonderful, caring and talented individuals to become board members of the newly formed non-profit, Next Step Living, Inc. In addition to our board members, we have been blessed with an outpouring of support from the greater Concord community and without the incredible generosity from Phil Hastings of Cleveland, Waters & Bass, P.A., and Jonathan Halle of Warren Street, this project never would have happened.
It does take a committed community to make this development a reality and we are so thankful for Concord, New Hampshire. We hope this is only the beginning of a model that will be replicated across the entire state. We are so grateful for the growing partnership with Shepherd's College as they continue to help us launch Next Step Living with their wealth of knowledge and resources.
